Themed Birthday: Penguin Party

One day last week I woke up as a joyful, emotional mother of a four year old. It was my son's birthday. I just have to brag on my boy for a minute... the kid is great. Such a sweet and sensitive child. He is thoughtful and compassionate and smart. I love my baby(errr... 4 year old)!

Birthdays should be extra special for everyone. It's important not to take life together for granted, and equally important to let those close to us know that we cherish their simple existence in our lives. I want my children to feel special and thought about on a daily basis, but especially their birthdays.

One simple way I like to make them feel loved is having a fun theme for their birthdays. I have been letting Koah choose his birthday theme since he turned three (so, for two years now). Last year he chose "Avengers" and it was relatively easy to pull off. There were lots of Avenger themed party options at Target and Party City. The choice this year? Penguins. Yep, he wanted a Penguin Party. Did you know that it's not easy to find penguin related party decor? Well, its not.

I recently purchased a Silhouette Portrait and have been putting it to good use these last few weeks. Valentine's Day cards and birthday fun. A few pieces of card stock and penguin party decor was no longer an issue, but rather a unique and fun birthday theme!

Along with the decorations we served Swedish fish, Penguins (like goldfish), and had a snowy white cake with icy blue sprinkles. The themed snacks we placed on the decorated table, and the rest of the food we kept at our bar area.

A few decorations sprinkled throughout our basement and we were good to go!

The penguin fridge was my favorite. Isn't it awesome?

Penguins everywhere! I just taped them to all of our serving dishes and our drink bin.
I also updated our chalkboard with a birthday message and penguin scene.

Koah received the movie Mr. Popper's Penguins as a gift!

Anyone else ever have a unique party request from their kiddos? I will happily welcome any special birthday requests from this point forward -- it's a nice, but low pressure way to stretch yourself creatively.

And as for my buddy... he sure has grown up. Check out  this video of him from when he was only 6 months old.

And now he's FOUR! Wow. I love you, Koah! Happy Birthday!
